Building “Green” Begins at Home

As Chairman of the firm, John Buck has always expressed that it is not enough to view a property or development by itself, but to consider its surrounding area and connection to the community. This vision is shared throughout the organization.

Adhering to this vision and as a US Green Building Council Member, JBC strives to design, construct and manage buildings that are environmentally responsible, successful and healthy places to live and work.

JBC DEVELOPMENT - In October 2005, JBC’s 111 South Wacker Drive development was the first speculative high-rise office building ever to earn a LEED® Core & Shell Gold certification.  155 North Wacker Drive, which opened June 2009, earned a LEED® Core & Shell Gold certification in May 2010. In addition, JBC developed One North Wacker in 2001 which predated the LEED®  program, however, JBC’s forethought in designing and building the Class A+ tower’s advanced systems made achieving LEED® Existing Building certification possible in 2008.

JBC MANAGEMENT - JBC is dedicated to implementing sustainable initiatives at its management portfolio through its day to day operations and tenant interaction.  By incorporating LEED® for Operations & Maintenance criteria in various service agreements, the JBC management team ensures that services such as recycling, janitorial, pest control, and landscaping are performed at levels that exceed the prerequisite criteria for LEED®  certification.  JBC’s management team partners with tenants to help them achieve LEED® for Corporate Interiors certification for their respective tenant construction.

JBC STRATEGIC ADVISORY - JBC’s Strategic Advisory Group assists corporate, institutional and not-for-profit clients on ways to improve their real estate efficiency, reduce cost and better align facilities with business strategy.  The group’s comprehensive services are focused on providing strategic analysis, lease negotiations and financial valuation services.  In addition, the group advises its clients on LEED® for Corporate Interiors criteria and standards, educating clients on how these efforts reduce occupancy costs, employee absenteeism and health care benefits while increasing employee retention and productivity.

JBC is committed to the practice of doing well by doing good.  This practice is carried out throughout the firm by providing world class quality products and services, developing buildings that enhance and preserve the environment, enriching the quality of life in the community and inspiring leadership within the firm.

“The John Buck Company is setting a great example for developers in Chicago and across the nation. All our new libraries, police stations and other public City buildings are being designed to achieve LEED®* certification. I encourage other private developers to follow The John Buck Company’s lead and adopt those same environmental standards in their buildings.”
